ASTRA Project

SkySoft-ATM is excited to be part of Project ASTRA, developing an AI tool to predict and resolve air traffic hotspots, enhancing safety and reducing CO2 emissions. In collaboration with skyguide and other partners, this initiative aims to revolutionize Air Traffic Management by 2026.

SkySoft-ATM is thrilled to share the latest developments in our involvement with Project ASTRA, a pioneering initiative under the European Commission’s SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking program. This ambitious project aims to revolutionize Air Traffic Management (ATM) through cutting-edge AI technology and strategic partnerships.

Introducing Project ASTRA

Project ASTRA is set to transform the landscape of air traffic management by developing an AI-based tool designed to predict and resolve air traffic hotspots at least one hour in advance. This proactive approach is expected to enhance both the safety and efficiency of ATM systems, providing significant benefits to the aviation industry and society at large.

Key Highlights of Project ASTRA

Goal: The core objective of Project ASTRA is to create an innovative AI-driven tool that can anticipate and mitigate air traffic congestion well before it occurs. By predicting potential hotspots with an hour’s notice, the system can help manage air traffic more effectively, reducing delays and increasing operational efficiency.

Partnership: This project is a collaborative effort, bringing together expertise from skyguide, INGENAV, the University of Malta, and Deep Blue. SkySoft-ATM plays a crucial role in this partnership by providing the sophisticated simulation platform needed for the project’s success.

Societal Impact: One of the significant benefits of Project ASTRA is its potential to reduce flight delays and lower CO2 emissions, contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly aviation industry. By optimizing air traffic flow, the project supports greener aviation practices and enhances passenger experience.

Safety Impact: Safety is a paramount concern in air traffic management. Project ASTRA aims to enhance ATM system safety by reducing medium-term and short-term conflicts. The AI tool’s predictive capabilities will allow for more timely interventions, thereby improving overall air traffic safety.

Timeline: Project ASTRA commenced last year and is expected to reach completion between 2025 and 2026. The initial development phase is currently in progress, with significant milestones and exercises planned for 2025. These activities will be crucial in testing and refining the AI tool to ensure its effectiveness and reliability.

As we continue to make strides in this groundbreaking project, we invite you to stay tuned for more updates on our progress and the exciting advancements in aviation technology that Project ASTRA promises to deliver. Together with our partners, SkySoft-ATM is committed to paving the way for a safer, more efficient, and greener future in air traffic management.
